Coronation Street: Gemma and Chesney Face Debt Twist

Coronation Street is set to deliver a devastating storyline for Gemma Winter-Brown (Dolly-Rose Campbell) and Chesney Brown (Sam Aston) as next week's spoilers confirm the couple face a major financial crisis. The beloved Rovers Return barmaid, who first appeared on the show in 2014 as Kylie Platt's friend, has been a fan favourite for over a decade, featuring in numerous major storylines from welcoming quadruplets to the heartbreaking loss of her brother Paul in 2024.

Joseph's School Report Sparks Worry

Next week, son Joseph (Will Flanagan) passes his school report to Chesney and Gemma before making a swift exit. They are shocked to learn that Joseph frequently submits his homework late. Later, Gemma complains to her mother Bernie (Jane Hazlegrove) that Joseph is struggling because it is virtually impossible for him to focus at home with five children. Bernie suggests he can work undisturbed at No.7, and Chesney is thankful for the offer.

Devastating News About School Fees

However, the situation takes a turn for the worse when Chesney visits the pub and delivers the news that Linda (Jacqueline Leonard) — Joseph's grandmother — has informed him her holiday rental business has gone bankrupt. She can no longer cover Joseph's school fees. In a devastating turn of events, Chesney reveals to Gemma he has been considering applying for a loan to cover the fees. Bernie is appalled at the prospect of them falling into debt.

Financial Struggles Continue

As viewers know, the couple already juggle childcare for five children alongside their own jobs and have faced financial struggles previously. Despite both being employed and claiming government benefits, they perpetually struggle to make ends meet and routinely confront cost-of-living crises, such as broken boilers or school fees. In 2024, Gemma had no option but to steal a pair of school shoes for her daughter.

Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
