Rio Ferdinand has changed his mind about Marcus Rashford's future at Manchester United. The former United defender previously argued that Rashford had no way back at Old Trafford, but now believes the forward could benefit from a different role at his parent club.
Rashford's Loan Spell and Return to Form
Rashford spent the last season-and-a-half on loan, first at Aston Villa and then at Barcelona. Barcelona had an option to sign him permanently for around £26 million but let it expire earlier this month. However, a goal for England against Croatia on Wednesday has refocused attention on his future.
Ferdinand now sees the 'finisher' role Rashford has played for England and at Barcelona as a potential way for him to revive his career at United, where he debuted as a teenager over a decade ago.
Ferdinand's Previous Stance
In January 2025, after then-manager Ruben Amorim publicly questioned Rashford's application, Ferdinand declared on his YouTube channel: "There's no way back for Marcus after that. If he did come back, that means other players can take their foot off the gas and have a way back into the team."
A New Perspective
In the latest episode of the same show, Ferdinand argued: "Manchester United might have to reevaluate Marcus Rashford’s situation. It seems like he has matured; the time away from the club may have done him the good that he needed, and it has cleansed both parties. Is it time to shake hands and come back?"
He added that the year under Hansi Flick at Barcelona helped Rashford understand his role as an impact player, coming off the bench to change games. At England, that role has made him "a huge asset to the squad."
What's Next for Rashford?
Rashford has now scored in back-to-back World Cups, having netted three times in Qatar in 2022. He will push for a start against Ghana in England's second match, but his performances have already given United and potential buyers much to consider.
