Two killed in Manchester car-digger crash; two arrested

A man and a woman have died following a collision between a car and a digger in Manchester. Emergency services were called to the A57 Hyde Road in Gorton at around 9.35pm on Wednesday evening after reports of the incident.

Crash details

Police said the car collided with a stationary digger near the junction with Clumber Road. Four people were inside the car at the time. The man and woman died at the scene, while two other men were taken to hospital with serious injuries. No further details about the victims have been released.

Arrests made

The two men who were hospitalised have since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. They are now in police custody, according to a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson.

Road closure and appeal

A stretch of Hyde Road from Balmoral Drive to Debdale Lane was cordoned off following the incident and remained closed for hours overnight while accident investigation work took place.

Detective Sergeant Louise Warhurst, of GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims in this tragic incident.

“We are appealing for any witnesses who may have saw the moments leading up to this incident, or anyone who has mobile phone, Ring doorbell or dash cam footage, to come forward and assist our investigation.
