Norway Boss Warns England Ahead of World Cup Quarter-Final

Stale Solbakken has warned that Norway believe they can defeat England in the World Cup quarter-final, but acknowledged his side must perform at their absolute peak to progress. England enter the match as strong favourites, while Norway are appearing in their first major tournament in 26 years.

Norway's Remarkable Run

Norway have already stunned Brazil in the tournament, with Erling Haaland scoring seven goals so far. Their fans have embraced the journey, creating a festive atmosphere. Solbakken, a former Wolves midfielder, noted that the players have confidence in their ability to cause an upset.

“I think the players deep down think they can beat England but we will need to be at our very, very best. If we’re not, then England will go through,” Solbakken said. He added that England face greater pressure, but his squad focuses on their own performance rather than external expectations.

Penalty Practice and Golden Generation

Solbakken confirmed that Norway have prepared for a potential penalty shootout. “We have prepared pretty well for penalties. We have a good order on the pitch for taking penalties but maybe something happens where you have to change things during the game,” he said.

He dismissed the notion that Norway are solely reliant on Haaland, comparing it to England’s dependence on Harry Kane. “It’s Norway v England but it’s no secret that Kane is the player for England and Erling is a big player for us. But don’t underestimate the clean sheets because we were so close to another in the last game against Brazil,” Solbakken stated.

Long-Awaited Return

Norway’s qualification for the World Cup after 26 years has been a source of national pride. Solbakken emphasised the significance: “If you have not been in the World Cup for 28 years so you can never take it for granted to be in the last eight of this tournament.” He also highlighted the blend of experienced and younger players, crediting the federation for developing a deep squad.

The match is set to take place in Miami, with England aiming for a semi-final spot. Norway, however, are determined to continue their historic run.
