Rory McIlroy has admitted he was 'too judgemental' of golfers who joined LIV Golf and now accepts the Saudi-backed league as part of the sport. The four-time major winner, who previously criticised LIV stars for leaving the PGA Tour for money, said he regrets his earlier stance.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, McIlroy said: 'I think at this point, I was maybe a little judgmental of the guys who went to LIV Golf at the start, and I think it was a bit of a mistake on my part because I now realise that not everyone is in my position or in Tiger Woods' position.' He added that he cannot judge players for making a living from the sport.
McIlroy, who has no intention of joining LIV, has resigned from the PGA Tour's policy board and launched his own golf league, TGL, with Tiger Woods. He acknowledged that fighting against LIV is not his job, stating: 'I've just accepted the fact that this is part of our sport now.'
The Northern Irishman's change of heart comes as several top players, including Masters champion Jon Rahm, have joined LIV. The PGA Tour is also in talks with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund over a potential merger.
