Former Manchester United striker Dion Dublin has urged his old club to pay approximately £80m to sign Harry Kane, insisting the 33-year-old Bayern Munich and England forward remains a guaranteed source of goals.
Kane's remarkable scoring record
Kane, now in the final year of his contract, joined Bayern in 2023 for a club-record fee of just below £100m and has scored 152 goals in 154 games for the German giants. That strike rate was mirrored with England after netting six times in four games over the past fortnight, convincing Dublin he is still worth every penny.
"Even at 33, 34, 35, I'd still nick Harry for a year or two because he just finds his way into good positions," he told football betting site BetVictor. "You put the ball there and he doesn't even have to run about as much.
"You can see he's dropping into the number 10 role a bit more, sometimes even into the four, and spraying balls about so he's not easy to mark. Two centre-halves don't know where he is, and then he crops up."
Dublin's confidence in Kane
"He's a very clever footballer. I would take Harry Kane right now at Man Utd. There's a bit of a statement in this, Harry Kane could start in any Premier League side," Dublin added. "Any Premier League side, it doesn't matter. Every club in the Premier League would take him right now, 100 per cent."
It is a difficult prospect to consider for United given the club's track record in modern times of buying star names beyond their best. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani and Cristiano Ronaldo (the second time) each joined the club past their primes, though the former had one prolific season before moving to Major League Soccer.
United's striking options
Kane, who has been linked with United for years, is still enjoying his best years and is once again high in the running for the Ballon d'Or this year. It would be just United's luck if they were to spend big on Kane only to witness his decline at Old Trafford, not that the thought has put off Dublin.
"United have toyed with it, they've spoken about it too much. If you want him, go get him," he continued. "Even if he signs a new deal there, give them the £70m or £80m, whatever they want, because you've got to get goals.
"Why are you buying Harry Kane? To score your goals. Who can you guarantee for goals? Haaland, Kane, Lewandowski, Mbappe, and then you start to struggle a bit for guaranteed scorers. Harry Kane guarantees you goals."
Michael Carrick has seen promise from £74m signing Benjamin Sesko, though the Slovenian's injury issues have become a concern. Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have each filled in as frontmen when required, while Marcus Rashford is also an option to lead the attack since returning to the club.
None of those names mentioned offers the same goal threat as Tottenham icon Kane, England's top scorer of all time. Bayern are in talks to extend Kane's contract beyond its July 2027 expiration date, at which point he'd become a free agent.
Bayern may be open to selling their star in January, particularly if they were able to effectively recoup their investment almost four years later. Kane also has his motivation to make the move happen given it would hand him another chance at breaking Alan Shearer's Premier League goals record.
