A significant fire has broken out at the historic West Essex Golf Club in Chingford, east London, sending plumes of smoke visible for miles. The blaze, which started at around 2:40pm on Monday, has engulfed the two-storey clubhouse, measuring approximately 25 metres by 15 metres.
Six fire crews, totalling around 60 firefighters, are currently at the scene working to extinguish the flames. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that all individuals have been accounted for and no injuries have been reported. Additional support has been provided by four fire engines from the London Fire Brigade and a crew from Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue Service.
Fire officers reported that they are making good progress in tackling the large fire, with efforts focused on preventing it from spreading to the rear of the building. An investigation into the cause of the fire will be carried out once it is safe to do so.
The golf club, which celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2025, was founded in 1900 and designed by Scottish golfer James Braid. Its elevated 270-degree landscape offers views of the London skyline.
