Bob MacIntyre saw a four-shot lead evaporate in the final round of the BMW Championship in Maryland, as world number one Scottie Scheffler produced a stunning chip from the rough on the 17th hole to secure victory. The Scot, hoping to seal his Ryder Cup place with a win, began Sunday with two bogeys and saw his advantage reduced to a single stroke.
Despite a gallant effort, MacIntyre could not halt Scheffler's momentum. After the American missed a putt on the third hole to restore MacIntyre's two-stroke lead, Scheffler levelled on the fifth when MacIntyre found a bunker. Scheffler then moved two clear on the 13th, only to bogey the 14th, but the pivotal moment came on the 15th when MacIntyre missed a birdie putt while Scheffler converted.
MacIntyre cut the lead to one with a birdie four at the 16th, having found the green in two with a 265-yard second shot. However, Scheffler's remarkable chip on the penultimate hole effectively sealed the title. MacIntyre, who had sunk a 41-foot putt on Saturday to retain his advantage, could not repeat that magic and finished with a three-over-par 73, two shots behind Scheffler's 15-under total of 265.
The victory was Scheffler's 18th on the PGA Tour and his fifth this year, marking the second consecutive season he has reached that number - a feat previously managed only by Tiger Woods. Tommy Fleetwood climbed to a tie for fourth with a final round of 67, behind American Maverick McNealy, while England's Harry Hall slipped to sixth after a disappointing 70.
Rory McIlroy's challenge faltered with back-to-back double bogeys on the fifth and sixth holes, matching Hall's 70 to finish in a tie for 12th.
