Harry Kane Breaks Gary Lineker's England World Cup Goals Record
Kane Breaks Lineker's World Cup Goals Record

Harry Kane scored his 11th goal at a World Cup to become England's all-time top scorer in the tournament, breaking Gary Lineker's record that had stood since 1990. The Bayern Munich striker's 67th-minute header secured a 2-0 victory over Panama in New Jersey, sending England top of Group L and into a round-of-32 match against DR Congo on Wednesday.

Lineker's X-Rated Reaction

Gary Lineker, 65, was watching the match alongside Micah Richards for his Netflix show, The Rest is Football. After Kane's goal, Richards celebrated by telling Lineker: "Harry, Harry I absolutely love you. Gary is no more, he's not relevant any more, he's irrelevant." Lineker retorted: "Shut the f*** up, will you?" before hitting the off button on his remote to remove Richards from the show. He later allowed Richards back, explaining: "I'll let you back because it's really late there."

Kane's Message to Lineker

Kane sent Lineker a message after the match, cheekily apologising: "Sorry Gary, I'm one ahead of you now." He added: "I'm sure he'll send some congratulations and I've said before one of England's greatest strikers, especially in World Cups. To go ahead of him now is a proud moment for myself and I'm sure he'll be happy for me."

In response, Lineker said: "Thank you very much Harry, sincere congratulations, absolutely. I genuinely mean it I'm thrilled for it. Forty years is a long time I am kind of bored of it. I couldn't be more thrilled that it's Harry Kane."

Record-Breaking Career

Lineker memorably scored six goals at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico and bagged four more in Italy four years later. Kane, 32, has now scored at three World Cups, becoming only the second England men's player to do so alongside David Beckham. He won the Golden Boot with six goals in Russia eight years ago, scored two in Qatar, and has three so far in North America, looking to increase his tally during the knockout stages.
