FIFA has revoked the World Cup accreditation of Paraguayan commentator Jorge Vera after he unleashed a furious, X-rated on-air outburst targeting referee Ivan Barton and FIFA president Gianni Infantino. The incident occurred during Paraguay's 1-0 victory over Turkey in the group stage, following the red card shown to Miguel Almiron for covering his mouth during a confrontation.
Red Card Controversy
Almiron became the first player in World Cup history to be sent off for covering his mouth, a regulation introduced to prevent players from hiding racist, discriminatory, or offensive language. Despite the setback, Paraguay secured a surprise win, with Almiron later praising his teammates and the Paraguayan federation.
Commentator's Tirade
During the live broadcast, Vera launched into a blistering attack on Salvadoran referee Ivan Barton, labeling him a thief and accusing FIFA of killing football. He directed his anger at Infantino, stating, "Thief, thief, Barton. They killed football. FIFA, you killed football. Infantino, you're responsible for this." Vera continued, "FIFA, take responsibility for turning football into this. A disgrace. You should be ashamed, Infantino." He also targeted CONMEBOL president Alejandro Domínguez, saying, "Alejandro Domínguez, less photos with Infantino. Grow a pair. You f------ thieves!"
Vera defended Almiron, questioning the new ruling: "What kind of racism could Miguel Almiron possibly use against the Turkish player? Show me some common sense."
FIFA's Response
FIFA swiftly revoked Vera's press credentials for the remainder of the tournament, citing his inflammatory remarks. The Paraguayan broadcaster ABC Cardinal, which Vera represents, issued a detailed statement urging FIFA to reconsider, arguing that the sanction was disproportionate. The statement read: "We believe that the permanent cancellation of a credential for the entire duration of the tournament constitutes an extreme and manifestly disproportionate sanction for a primary infraction that was immediately acknowledged, for which formal apologies and concrete mechanisms for redress were offered."
ABC Cardinal emphasized that corrective measures were implemented and that sanctions should be reasonable and proportionate. The statement added: "No sanction should disregard a professional career based on an isolated incident that has been acknowledged and rectified."
Public Apology
After his credentials were revoked, Vera took to social media to apologize. In a video, he expressed regret for his personal attacks, saying via translation: "During the live transmission of the Paraguay-Turkey match, in the heat of the moment and the tension of the broadcast, I made comments that exceeded the limits. I used strong expressions and personal attacks against the referee and FIFA officials, which I deeply regret. I recognize that I went too far with my words. I have already sent a formal note of rectification and apologies directly to the FIFA accreditation team, acknowledging the verbal excess caused by the pressure of the live broadcast."
He concluded: "I want to apologize publicly to FIFA, to the refereeing team, to my colleagues, and especially to the audience for any offence my words may have caused. It was never my intention to attack anyone personally. I got carried away in the emotion of the moment. I take full responsibility for my mistake."
