Drag queens traded their high heels for rugby studs on Sunday, July 19, as the annual drag rugby match took place at Cardiff Arms Park, drawing its biggest ever crowd. The sold-out event featured a team of Cardiff's drag acts facing off against the Cardiff Lions RFC, with all proceeds benefiting the Dreams and Wishes charity.
World's Only Drag Rugby Event
Organised by Mary's bar and Cardiff Lions RFC, the match is recognised as the world's only drag rugby event. This year's 2026 edition saw record attendance, with tickets completely sold out. The game raised funds for Dreams and Wishes, a charity that supports children with life-limiting conditions.
Cardiff Lions RFC, established in 2004, is Wales' first inclusive rugby union football club. The club prides itself on being open to players of all skill levels and sexual orientations, fostering a welcoming environment for everyone.
Post-Match Thanks and Highlights
After the match, Mary's bar took to social media to express gratitude: "We're truly overwhelmed by the attendance today for Drag Rugby. It's by far our biggest and best year to date raising an amazing amount for Dreams and Wishes (final total to follow…)"
The post continued: "We have to thank so many people… Every single drag queen who gave up their free time to participate (there's too many to tag)" and "To the Cardiff Lions who year after year give their time so willingly for this important event."
Half-time entertainment included performances by the South Wales Gay Men's Chorus, Gavin Sheppard, and Miss Kitty, who led the crowd in The Time Warp. The event also featured filming by AOTV, sound by DJ Krys, and refereeing by Khalid.
