New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed he has spoken to Enzo Fernandez and wants the Argentine midfielder to remain at the club next season, despite Fernandez expressing a desire to leave this summer. Chelsea have placed a £120 million price tag on the 25-year-old, who is currently with Argentina at the 2026 World Cup ahead of a semi-final clash against England on Wednesday.
Alonso's stance on Fernandez
Speaking at his unveiling as Chelsea boss, Alonso was asked directly if he wanted Fernandez to stay. He replied: “Yes.” The Spaniard added: “We have spoken. But as you can understand, what we have spoken (about) it remains private.” Fernandez has reportedly eyed Real Madrid as his dream destination, though the Spanish club has publicly denied interest in the World Cup winner.
Plans for Cole Palmer
Alonso also discussed Cole Palmer, who returned for pre-season training last week. He described the 23-year-old as a “special talent” and confirmed he will be central to Chelsea's attacking plans. “We have had a few trainings already, and from the first day you can see he is a special player,” Alonso said. “He is able to play the right decision in the right spot. I am happy that he has come in a good mood, in a good mindset to have a great season. If we are able to build a strong team with the proper stability to find the key players, for sure, Cole is going to be one of those key players in the attacking part.”
