Open golf has put Portrush on the map, say proud locals

The 153rd Open at Royal Portrush is putting the Co Antrim town on the global map, delighted locals have said. Tens of thousands turned out for day two, with crowds cheering for local hero Rory McIlroy and Dubliner Shane Lowry, who won the Claret Jug when the Open last came to Portrush in 2019.

Almost 280,000 fans snapped up tickets, many enjoying the beaches and hospitality despite inclement weather. One local described it as 'the biggest sporting event ever in Ireland' being held in 'the tiniest corner of the north west of Northern Ireland', adding that it is putting Portrush on the map worldwide, with messages coming from Canada, China, and Japan praising the golden beaches.

Visitors also praised the scenery and friendliness. Lauren Mullikin from Indiana said Portrush is beautiful and everyone is friendly. Eleanor Tunn and Sandy Sutherland from the Scottish Highlands called the course one of the most scenic they've ever seen. Denver Smith from Dungannon said it was good to see the boys doing well and hoped for another winner from the north of Ireland.
