Dwight Yorke has voiced concerns over Michael Carrick’s handling of Benjamin Sesko, one of Ruben Amorim’s most expensive Manchester United signings. The former striker believes the £74 million recruit from RB Leipzig should be an automatic starter up front once he regains full fitness.
United’s sluggish start
Manchester United have won just one of their opening six Premier League matches. On Saturday, they were held to a draw by 10-man Tottenham at Old Trafford, with Bryan Mbeumo’s second-half goal seemingly putting Carrick’s side on course for victory before Dominic Solanke’s injury-time header rescued a point for Spurs.
The Red Devils now face a tough test on Tuesday night, travelling to the Spanish capital to play Atletico Madrid in Europe.
Yorke’s call to trust Sesko
Sesko, a 23-year-old Slovenia international, has been struggling with a persistent shin splint injury that may yet require surgery. When available, however, Yorke has been puzzled by Carrick’s reluctance to start him.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Yorke said: ‘Manchester United has always been talented in terms of the attacking areas and we always tend to win games from the front.
‘Yes, defenders do play their role and there have been some terrific defenders in the past.
‘When you look at those players up top, for me the big question mark there with Carrick, I don’t understand why Sesko doesn’t play.
‘I know he’s injured now but you’ve got to play the guy as a nine. You have to trust the kid, he’s got all the attributes.
‘Yes, he’s come off the bench and scored but you have to push him up top and let the others feed off him.’
Yorke added: ‘He’s a handful, he works extremely hard and for me that’s the one thing that’s a bit concerning that he doesn’t give Sesko that opportunity to really lead that line up top.’
