Former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has voiced his support for Michael Carrick to be appointed as Manchester United's permanent manager, praising the interim boss for restoring the basics at Old Trafford.
Carrick, who took over on an interim basis in January, has guided United to third place in the Premier League, with a 1-0 victory over Chelsea on Saturday extending their lead in the Champions League spots to 10 points with five games remaining.
Speaking after attending the match at Stamford Bridge, Toure wrote on X: 'I was watching with added interest as two young coaches I like and admire went head to head. Michael Carrick is doing so so well at Manchester United and has to be in with a very good chance of having the manager job permanently.'
The Ivory Coast international highlighted Carrick's ability to get the fundamentals right. 'In football we rightly talk lots about tactics, shape and systems. But I love how Michael has got the basics right,' Toure added. 'He's got players in their best positions and has his team enjoying their football again. He says they will play better in the future. I believe him.'
Carrick himself was pleased with the clean sheet against Chelsea. 'That was massive, that was a big win for us,' he said. 'They had some opportunities but to keep a clean sheet and defend like we did, there was a lot of work that had to go into the last day or so in terms of prepping the team with a new back four.'
