Xabi Alonso Signs Four-Year Deal as New Chelsea Manager
Xabi Alonso Appointed Chelsea Manager on Four-Year Deal

Xabi Alonso has signed a four-year deal to become Chelsea's new manager and will begin work on July 1. The former Real Madrid boss replaces Liam Rosenior after an agreement was reached late on Saturday, with the club confirming the appointment following their FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City.

The 44-year-old emerged last week as the leading candidate to become owners BlueCo's fifth permanent appointment since 2022. Although several other coaches were considered, the situation moved quickly as the club prioritised appointing an elite coach of sufficient calibre and standing in the game.

Alonso's Statement

"Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club," Alonso said on the club website. "From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies."

He added: "There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies."

Background and Expectations

Alonso has not worked since being sacked by Real Madrid in January after seven months, having been appointed after leading Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga title-winning season in 2024. The Press Association understands Alonso has received assurances he will have sufficient authority to influence decision-making, with Chelsea accepting past mistakes in appointments have contributed to a disastrous campaign this season.

The priority internally is to improve standards within the squad both on and away from the pitch. Alonso's reputation as a manager and former player was a key consideration as the hierarchy seeks to mend what has looked a broken club this season. The players' attitude has been called into serious question, with some of the squad appearing to down tools under Rosenior who, although liked, failed to command the respect of the dressing room.

Managerial Authority

Alonso has been chosen as a coach whose achievements can serve as an example and raise standards. It is understood he will have significant input into recruitment decisions, although the policy will still be conducted in close collaboration with the club's team of five sporting directors. The decision to hand him the title of manager rather than head coach has been taken out of respect for his standing as a two-time Champions League winner as a player and title winner at Leverkusen.

A statement from Chelsea said: "His appointment reflects the Club's belief in his broad set of experiences, coaching quality and game model, leadership attributes, character and integrity, which were key to the decision to ask him to help lead the next phase of Chelsea's journey."

Next Phase at Stamford Bridge

The appointment represents a significant departure at the start of what is set to be a period of change at Stamford Bridge as the club enters what is being called internally its "next phase." The club have already indicated a rethinking of transfer policy, with priority being towards signing established players who are ready to challenge for the Premier League title, rather than promising but inexperienced buys.

Alonso's seniority in the game marks him out from previous appointments. Rosenior was brought in from Ligue 1 Strasbourg, having previously managed Hull of the Championship, whilst his predecessor Enzo Maresca was poached from the second tier with Leicester.
