Wrexham's Championship Push Hit by Dressing Room Sickness Bug

Wrexham's Championship campaign has been disrupted by an unexpected dressing room sickness bug, with manager Phil Parkinson confirming that multiple players have been struck down by a mystery illness. The outbreak has left the squad running on fumes, even as they secured a vital 2-1 win over Portsmouth at the Racecourse Ground on Tuesday evening.

Illness Impacts Performance Despite Victory

Despite taking control in North Wales with a commanding first half, Wrexham's physical demands became apparent after the interval. Goals from Sam Smith and Max Cleworth handed the home side a comfortable advantage before half-time, but Zak Swanson's deflected strike early in the second half clawed one back for John Mousinho's Portsmouth, forcing a tired Wrexham into a rearguard action.

Parkinson's Candid Admission

Parkinson spoke openly about his team's lack of normal intensity, attributing it to the spreading virus. He said: "The energy levels weren't quite where they needed to be, we've had a bit of illness in the camp over the last few days. But we just dug deep as a team and we restricted them to very few chances."

He confirmed that several players were affected, including Sam Smith, who felt ill at half-time, and Kieffer Moore, who had been unwell in the preceding days. With the bug persisting, the club is taking precautions to prevent further spread.

Precautions and Recovery Plans

Parkinson added: "Sometimes you get that and someone might bring it into the club from home. We'll just clear the building in the next day or two and come back ready to go again." This move aims to sanitise the environment and allow players to recover fully.

Championship Standings and Play-Off Hopes

Wrexham currently sit sixth in the Championship with 12 fixtures remaining, as they chase a play-off berth. Discussing the display against Portsmouth, Parkinson noted: "Second-half, the deflected goal's gone in and we didn't quite get the control we wanted. We just couldn't get hold of the ball and link the game like we'd done in the first half."

He highlighted that it wasn't until around the 70th minute that Wrexham regained momentum, with Ollie Rathbone hitting the post for what could have been a decisive chance. Parkinson concluded: "But sometimes football is about finding a way to win and we've done that really well. We dug deep and it's a great win."

The illness outbreak poses a challenge for Wrexham as they navigate the final stretch of the season, but their resilience in securing three points against Portsmouth demonstrates their determination to maintain their promotion push despite health setbacks.
