WNBA's Landmark CBA Deal: Top Players to Earn $1.4 Million Annually

The WNBA has entered a transformative phase with the unanimous ratification of a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) by both the league's board of governors and its players. This seven-year deal, which commences this season and extends through 2032, marks a historic labor agreement that promises to reshape the financial landscape of women's professional basketball.

Unanimous Approval and Key Financial Terms

On Tuesday, the WNBA's board of governors voted unanimously to ratify the terms of the new CBA, following a similar unanimous approval by the players just a day earlier. This swift consensus underscores the widespread support for the agreement across all stakeholders.

Under the new CBA, the minimum salary for the league will be set at $270,000. This represents a significant increase, as last season's maximum salary was approximately $250,000. The deal introduces a supermax salary of $1.4 million for top-tier players, such as Caitlin Clark and Sabrina Ionescu, who are poised for substantial pay rises. Additionally, the salary cap for each team will rise dramatically to $7 million for the upcoming season, up from $1.5 million in 2025.

A Bold New Era for the WNBA

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert hailed the agreement as the beginning of a bold new era for the league. She emphasized that this milestone was made possible by the collective efforts of players, team owners, fans, investors, and partners. Engelbert noted that the focus now shifts to building on the league's unprecedented momentum and preparing for its milestone 30th season, which tips off in May.

Lawyers from both sides are currently drafting the long-form version of the agreement, with completion expected imminently. This paves the way for a rapid sequence of events leading up to the regular season start on 8 May.

Upcoming League Activities and Challenges

The ratification triggers a sprint to the regular season, with several key activities scheduled in quick succession. First, an expansion draft will be held for the two new teams, Toronto and Portland. The specific rules regarding player protections and draft procedures are still being finalized, but the draft is anticipated to occur around the time of the NCAA Final Four.

Following the expansion draft, free agency will open. This year, more than 80% of players are free agents, as many had signed deals set to expire last year. Notably, only two veteran players not under rookie contracts are already signed for this season. The college draft is slated for 13 April in New York, and teams are expected to begin training camp on 19 April, leaving limited time for preparation before the regular season commences.

This new CBA not only enhances player compensation but also sets the stage for increased competitiveness and growth in the WNBA, potentially attracting more talent and investment to the league.
