Florian Wirtz has confessed he believed his goal in Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Fulham should have been ruled out for offside. The German international levelled the score just before the hour mark at Craven Cottage, but the linesman initially raised his flag. After a VAR review, the goal was awarded despite replays suggesting Wirtz was in an offside position.
Wirtz admitted he did not celebrate because he was convinced he was offside. 'I was sure it was offside so I didn't even celebrate,' he said. 'I was happy that I scored but I'd rather take the three points.'
Liverpool thought they had secured victory when Cody Gakpo scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time, but Harrison Reed equalised with a stunning 30-yard strike three minutes later. Wirtz expressed his disappointment, saying: 'Not satisfied at all. We need points and we wanted three points today.'
The midfielder praised Reed's goal as 'unbelievable' but lamented his side's performance. 'The intensity we brought in the second half was much better. We didn't press them well in the first half,' he added.
Manager Arne Slot also voiced frustration, noting that Liverpool have dropped points late in games multiple times this season. 'It is not for the first time this season that we have conceded in the final seconds. So many points have disappeared for us,' he said.
Slot acknowledged the quality of Reed's strike but insisted his team must improve. 'We have to improve so a shot in the last minute does not immediately lead to us losing points,' he added.
