Wirtz injury 'not too bad' as Liverpool told they look 'scary'

Florian Wirtz has insisted the injury he picked up during Liverpool's 2-0 win over Brighton is "not too bad," while pundit Ashley Williams has warned the Reds are looking "scary" for the rest of the Premier League.

Liverpool moved fourth in the table with the victory on Sunday, their fourth consecutive win since losing 3-0 to Manchester City earlier this month. An own goal from Pascal Gross and a strike from Alexander Isak sealed the points, ending Brighton's run of four straight wins and five consecutive clean sheets.

Wirtz provides injury update

Wirtz was substituted on in the 65th minute after appearing to jar his ankle in a challenge, causing concern given the form of the £116million midfielder. However, he moved to play down fears of a serious problem after the game.

"I think it should be alright," Wirtz said. "It's not too bad. I don't know much yet, we have to check it, but it won't be long."

Fans will hope to see Wirtz in action when Liverpool face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, a match that pits the Reds against a side managed by former Anfield hero Xabi Alonso, who also coached Wirtz at Bayer Leverkusen.

Williams issues 'scary' warning

Liverpool are looking "scary" and will be striking fear into their rivals, according to Match of the Day pundit Ashley Williams. After a slow start to the season, the Reds have picked up momentum and are playing fast, fluid football, with Alexander Isak, Wirtz and Bradley Barcola among those firing.

Williams believes this is a sign that Liverpool mean business and could soon be closing in on Arsenal and Manchester City. "Iraola is the type of manager that defends well," the Welshman said on Match of the Day.

"He doesn't waste time and try to build up too slowly. If he can go fast, with the pace that he has at the top of the pitch, then he does it. Now he has got those players like Bradley Barcola, Cody Gakpo, Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak. If they are all fit and they are on the pitch, he is not going to waste any time."

"They get the ball forward, they are dynamic, and we know it is difficult to defend against pace - especially pace and willing runners in behind. We are seeing signs of an Iraola team, which is scary for the rest of the league as they just creep up."
