The Chicago White Sox have announced a significant expansion of their promotional tribute to Pope Leo XIV, a Chicago native and devoted longtime supporter of the Major League Baseball franchise. In a move that underscores the team's commitment to celebrating its most famous fan, the White Sox revealed on Friday that they will now distribute pope-themed hats to every fan attending their August 11th home game against the Cincinnati Reds.
From Limited Offer to Full-Scale Giveaway
Originally, the distinctive papal miter-shaped hats, which feature the team's iconic sock logo at the centre, were reserved exclusively for fans who had purchased speciality theme night tickets. However, due to overwhelming demand and positive feedback, the organisation has decided to make the item available to all attendees. Brooks Boyer, the chief revenue and marketing officer for the White Sox, emphasised the decision in an official release.
"The fans have spoken, and unlike some of our more limited quantity promotions, the White Sox Pope Hat is one we believe all fans should have the opportunity to take home," Boyer stated. "We viewed the promotion as a creative way to celebrate one of the franchise's most popular fans, and by the overwhelming response we received, White Sox fans certainly agreed."
Honouring a Historic Fan
Pope Leo XIV, formerly Robert Prevost, has a well-documented history with the White Sox. He attended the team's 2005 World Series opener against the Houston Astros, witnessing a 5-3 victory that paved the way for a four-game sweep and the franchise's first championship since 1917. This deep connection has been honoured through various initiatives over the past year.
In May, the White Sox unveiled a graphic installation near his former seat, featuring artwork of a waving Pope Leo XIV alongside a broadcast image from the 2005 game showing him with his good friend Ed Schmit and grandson Eddie. June saw Rate Field host an event commemorating his election as the first American pope, followed by a July pregame ceremony where White Sox legend Paul Konerko received a jersey signed by the pope, symbolically exchanged between two individuals associated with the number 14.
A Pope Who Breaks Protocol
Pope Leo XIV has not shied away from publicly displaying his allegiance, even breaking Vatican protocol by wearing a White Sox cap last year. His enthusiastic support was further demonstrated in October when he responded to a "go Cubs" shout with a retort of "they lost," and more recently, he gave a thumbs up to a fan who yelled "God bless the White Sox!"
Fans who had already secured the specialty theme night tickets will still receive the pope hat along with an additional commemorative item, ensuring their early support is recognised. This expanded giveaway highlights the unique bond between the pontiff and his hometown team, blending sports fandom with cultural tribute in a memorable promotional event.
