West Bromwich Albion have reportedly set their sights on former Manchester United coach Eric Ramsay as they search for a new manager following the dismissal of Ryan Mason.
Search Begins After Mason's Departure
The Championship club parted ways with head coach Ryan Mason earlier this week, with the Baggies languishing in 18th place in the league table. The decision came after a tenth consecutive away defeat, leaving the club just seven points above the relegation zone. Assistant Head Coach Nigel Gibbs and First Team Coach Sam Pooley also departed The Hawthorns.
First Team Coach James Morrison has been placed in temporary charge while the club's hierarchy begins the recruitment process for a permanent successor.
Eric Ramsay Emerges as Leading Contender
According to BBC reports, 33-year-old Eric Ramsay has been identified as a candidate for the role. Ramsay is currently in charge of Major League Soccer side Minnesota United, whom he has guided to back-to-back Conference play-off semi-finals.
This is not the first time Ramsay has been on West Brom's radar. The club considered him last summer before ultimately appointing Mason. Ramsay built his coaching reputation at Manchester United, serving as a first-team coach under both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Erik ten Hag. He also held an assistant role with the Welsh national team.
A Young Manager with a Distinct Style
Ramsay's background is somewhat unconventional. A former player in the Welsh Premier League, he quit playing early to pursue coaching. He gained experience in the academy setups at Swansea City, Chelsea, and Shrewsbury Town before his breakthrough at senior level.
His managerial philosophy at Minnesota United is described as transitional, with a focus on counter-attacks rather than possession-based football. This approach marks a potential shift in style for West Brom.
However, some supporters may express concern about the club appointing another relatively inexperienced manager. Mason's tenure lasted just seven months, and Ramsay, while highly regarded, is still early in his career as a number one.
The situation carries urgency for West Brom. The new MLS season begins next month, meaning they would need to negotiate Ramsay's release from Minnesota United promptly if they decide he is their preferred choice.
