Wenger Hails Infantino's FIFA Impact Over Ten Years

Arsene Wenger Lauds Gianni Infantino's Transformative FIFA Leadership

As FIFA president Gianni Infantino marks ten years in office this week, former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has delivered a glowing tribute, highlighting the significant advancements in global football under his stewardship. Wenger, who serves as FIFA's Chief of Global Football Development, emphasised the profound impact of Infantino's initiatives on the sport's growth and education worldwide.

Decade of Development and Expansion

Infantino's tenure has been characterised by a commitment to inclusivity and progress, with Wenger noting that FIFA should feel immensely proud of the huge improvement achieved. Key milestones include the expansion of the World Cup to 48 teams and ambitious plans to establish 100 academies across 100 countries, aimed at levelling the playing field for smaller nations.

Wenger stated, "Overall, we have gone through a lot. When you're at FIFA, you're always under pressure and scrutiny, but I believe the highlights are our efforts to develop the game by improving its roots and competitions." He added that the last decade has seen football evolve significantly in popularity and structure, crediting Infantino's openness to new ideas and forward-thinking approach.

Educational Programmes as a Game-Changer

A cornerstone of Infantino's legacy, according to Wenger, is FIFA's shift towards an educational role. Previously focused on organising competitions and upholding rules, FIFA has now embraced responsibility for global football education. Wenger explained, "For the first time in the last 10 years, FIFA has gone into an educational role and responsibility, and that, in my opinion, will change the world."

This includes initiatives like annual U-15 and U-17 World Cups, which Wenger believes will transform football worldwide. He emphasised that these programmes help unify standards and elevate the game in countries previously lagging behind Europe, fostering a more equitable and higher-level global football community.

Infantino's Support and Vision

Wenger praised Infantino as a driving force behind youth development, women's football, and tournament expansion. He noted that Infantino has been a huge supporter of educational suggestions, securing funds and federation backing for development programmes. "Gianni is somebody who wants to move forward. He's always open to new ideas and has been a huge supporter of the Development Programme," Wenger said.

Reflecting on his own role at FIFA since 2019, Wenger expressed satisfaction that his goal of improving youth education is being realised, validating his decision to join the organisation. He concluded that the global excitement for developing football potential underscores the success of Infantino's leadership, making a lasting impact on the sport's future.
