Danny Welbeck has recalled how Sir Alex Ferguson called him to offer congratulations after his FA Cup heroics for Brighton last season. The former Manchester United striker scored an extra-time winner against Newcastle in the quarter-finals, and later received a call from his old manager, who was in South Africa at the time.
Welbeck told BBC Sport: 'After the Newcastle goal, I think he was away in South Africa, and he rang me. It's 'No caller ID' that always rings, and I was just like, 'Hello?' Sometimes I don't even answer, but it was him and he was just buzzing.' He added that Ferguson always looks out for his players and they remain in contact.
The 34-year-old repeated his FA Cup heroics on Sunday, scoring the winner as Brighton beat Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford. His strike ended United's four-match unbeaten run and may have been Darren Fletcher's last match as caretaker manager, with Michael Carrick set to take over.
Welbeck, who made his senior debut under Ferguson at age 17, won the League Cup and Club World Cup in his first season, and the Premier League title in 2013. He now has nine goals this season, more than any Manchester United player, with Bryan Mbeumo leading the squad on seven.
