Lindsey Vonn Credits Doctor for Saving Leg from Amputation After Olympic Crash
Vonn Thanks Doctor for Saving Leg from Amputation After Crash

Olympic skiing champion Lindsey Vonn has publicly expressed her profound gratitude to the medical professional who prevented the amputation of her leg following a catastrophic crash at the Winter Olympics. The 41-year-old athlete sustained severe injuries during the women's downhill race on February 8, resulting in multiple fractures and subsequent surgeries.

Severe Injury and Emergency Intervention

In a detailed video shared on Instagram, Vonn described the incident as "by far the most extreme, painful and challenging" injury of her career, noting that "everything was in pieces." She explained that she developed compartment syndrome, a dangerous condition where excessive trauma causes blood to become trapped, crushing muscles, nerves, and tendons within a confined space.

Doctor's Life-Saving Procedure

Vonn specifically credited Dr. Tom Hackett with performing a fasciotomy, an emergency surgical procedure where both sides of her leg were cut open to relieve pressure and restore circulation. "Doctor Tom Hackett saved my leg. He saved my leg from being amputated," Vonn stated emphatically. She highlighted the fortunate coincidence that Dr. Hackett was present due to a prior ACL tear she sustained before the Olympics, which she believes was providential timing.

Additional Injuries and Recovery Timeline

Beyond the broken leg, Vonn disclosed that she also fractured her ankle and required a blood transfusion due to significant blood loss from multiple operations. She outlined a challenging recovery path, beginning with rehabilitation focused on transitioning from a wheelchair to crutches within weeks. The complete healing of bones is expected to take approximately one year, after which decisions regarding surgical hardware removal and ACL reconstruction will be made.

Support from the Sports Community

Football icon Cristiano Ronaldo responded to Vonn's Instagram post with words of encouragement, praising her resilience. "Champions are defined by the moments they win, and the moments they refuse to give up," Ronaldo commented. He added, "Lindsey Vonn the mountains you conquered were never bigger than the strength you carry. Keep fighting. Legends always rise."

Vonn remains optimistic despite the lengthy recovery ahead, expressing relief at being discharged from hospital and determination to overcome this setback through perseverance and medical support.
