Violent clashes erupted outside St James' Park before the Tyne-Wear derby between Newcastle United and Sunderland on Sunday. Police separated rival fans after a small group of Sunderland supporters reportedly broke away from their police escort and confronted Newcastle fans, leading to skirmishes. Eyewitnesses reported that CPR was administered to one individual before they were taken away.
The match itself saw Sunderland secure a 2-1 victory, their first at St James' Park in ten years. Newcastle had taken the lead through Anthony Gordon, but goals from Chemsdine Talbi and Brian Brobbey turned the game in Sunderland's favour.
During the second half, the match was temporarily paused following a report of discriminatory abuse directed at Sunderland's Lutsharel Geertruida. The Premier League issued a statement confirming the incident would be fully investigated, stating: 'Racism has no place in our game or anywhere in society.'
Northumbria Police had earlier warned of a zero-tolerance approach to troublemakers, with a police-supported escort for Sunderland fans departing from Newcastle Central Station. Chief Superintendent Hall emphasised that robust action, including criminal prosecution and football banning orders, would be taken against anyone causing trouble.
