Van Persie Slams 'Inappropriate' Criticism of Sterling After Feyenoord Debut
Van Persie Slams 'Inappropriate' Sterling Criticism

Van Persie Condemns Harsh Backlash Against Sterling's Feyenoord Introduction

Feyenoord manager Robin van Persie has launched a robust defence of his new signing Raheem Sterling, branding the intense criticism directed at the player following his debut as "inappropriate" and lacking context. Sterling, who joined the Dutch club earlier this month after mutually terminating his lucrative £325,000-a-week contract with Chelsea in January, made his first appearance for Feyenoord as a substitute in a 2-1 victory over Telstar last Sunday.

Understanding the Context of Sterling's Situation

The former Chelsea star had spent nine months in exile at Stamford Bridge without making a single competitive appearance this season, leading to understandable rustiness during his brief cameo. This performance triggered a wave of negative reactions on social media platforms, with some accounts delivering particularly scathing assessments of his display.

Van Persie addressed the criticism directly during his pre-match press conference on Friday ahead of Feyenoord's clash with FC Twente. "If you have a little sense of context, where he comes from, what he's achieved in the past, and that he hasn't had any team training for months," the former Manchester United forward stated emphatically.

"I understand that there are expectations of an absolute top player, but to criticise him like that after half an hour - his first half hour after over six months - then you really don't understand anything at all."

The Specific Nature of Dutch Criticism

While acknowledging that criticism comes with the territory of professional football in the Netherlands, Van Persie distinguished between reasonable assessment and what he considered excessive commentary. "A large part was positive, but some of it was also quite Dutch. Being blunt about everything that everyone thought wasn't right," he explained.

The Feyenoord boss elaborated on his perspective regarding appropriate evaluation timelines. "If you're five or six weeks in and you think he's not delivering, okay, then you have a point. But to throw out such strong opinions based on his first half hour, I thought, was inappropriate."

Social Media Backlash and Teammate Support

The criticism referenced by Van Persie included particularly harsh commentary from popular Instagram account FootballPark, which boasts nearly 100,000 followers. The account described Sterling's debut performance as resembling "Bambi on Ice" and suggested the 31-year-old winger should consider retirement.

The post read: "Raheem Sterling's debut for Feyenoord was not exactly a success story – in fact, it looked like a veritable disaster from the Dutch club's point of view. The English winger looked like Bambi on ice. On a downward spiral since 2022, lacking motivation, and seemingly unable to play under anyone who isn't named Pep Guardiola, Sterling is well and truly into his twilight years."

Sterling received support from former Manchester City teammate Jack Grealish, who passionately defended the player online. Grealish responded to the critical post with: "What a f*****g stupid Instagram post man what's wrong with you guys. Guy hasn't played or trained for so long. Ppl like u guys is what wrong with the world. Have some respect."

Van Persie's intervention highlights the challenging transition Sterling faces as he attempts to rebuild his career in the Netherlands after his Chelsea departure, while also underscoring the intense scrutiny modern footballers face from digital commentators.
