Virgil van Dijk has expressed his desire for Andy Robertson to remain at Liverpool as negotiations continue with Tottenham Hotspur over a potential transfer before the January window closes. Robertson, Liverpool's vice-captain, has been in talks over a new contract, but Tottenham's unexpected approach earlier this week has led to ongoing discussions between the two clubs. The Scotland skipper is reportedly keen for regular first-team football ahead of his nation's first World Cup appearance since 1998.
Van Dijk revealed he has spoken to Robertson about the speculation. 'Of course I speak to him every day. Robbo is a very important member of our team and I want him to stay, but whatever happens, let's see,' said Van Dijk. He declined to speculate on whether Robertson would play in Wednesday's Champions League match against Qarabag.
The defeat at Bournemouth dealt a blow to Liverpool's Champions League qualification hopes. Van Dijk admitted fatigue may have been a factor after their midweek win over Marseille, but stressed the team must find consistency. Liverpool now have a chance to secure a top-eight finish in the Champions League group stage with a win on Wednesday.
