Edwin van der Sar Shares Health Update Following Brain Haemorrhage

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has provided a detailed account of the brain haemorrhage he experienced in 2023, describing how the life-altering event has reshaped his perspective. The football icon suffered the medical emergency while on holiday, leading to intensive care treatment and a significant recovery period.

Symptoms and Immediate Response

Van der Sar recounted the initial signs of his condition during a sailing trip in Croatia. "On the last day, in the hotel, I got up to go to the toilet and felt dizzy, and I felt my neck," he explained. "I went back into the room and said, 'Close the curtains', and I sat on the bed not feeling well." His wife promptly contacted medical professionals, who diagnosed a brain haemorrhage.

The 55-year-old was admitted to intensive care, where he remained for three weeks before beginning rehabilitation. "Then you have the recovery process and rehabilitation, and you know as a player you also want the best people around you and a programme fitted for you," Van der Sar noted.

Timing and Career Transition

The health scare occurred just months after Van der Sar resigned from his director role at Ajax in 2023, following a distinguished career that included:

  • Over 250 appearances for Manchester United after joining from Fulham in 2005
  • Four Premier League titles and a Champions League victory
  • Retirement from professional football in 2011 at age 40
  • Subsequent executive position at Ajax until his departure

Van der Sar believes his decision to leave Ajax proved fortuitous for his recovery. "One of the things that helped was that I had just quit my job at Ajax as a director," he said. "I had no pressure about going back into a job – no phone calls, no emails, no decision-making – so that helped a lot to recover to the level that I am now."

Recovery and New Lifestyle

Now three years post-incident, Van der Sar reports positive health outcomes and embraces a more relaxed existence. "I'm OK now," he stated. "I've had time to recover with no stress, no phone in my hand – just doing the stuff that I've wanted to do."

His current lifestyle includes:

  1. Waking without strict schedules
  2. Walking his dog and swimming in the sea
  3. Extended holidays, including a two-month trip to New Zealand with his wife Annemarie
  4. Freedom from professional football commitments

Despite the serious nature of his health scare, Van der Sar maintains his characteristic outlook. "No, I'm not that type of guy," he responded when asked if the experience changed his approach to life. "What was nice for me was that I wanted to have a rest, take a year out of football."

The former goalkeeper reflected on his career trajectory, acknowledging the extended break exceeded initial expectations. "I started playing at 18 or 19, finished at 40, and at 41 I became one of the directors at Ajax until 53, so I thought it was the right time to take a step back," Van der Sar concluded. "That's taken a little bit longer than I originally thought, to be fair, but we are enjoying ourselves very much."
