Ex-Manchester United Star Valencia Sends Touching Message After Horror Injury in Ecuador
Former Manchester United cult hero Antonio Valencia has spoken out in support of his Ecuadorian compatriot Jean Pierre Arroyo Vernaza, who suffered a sickening leg injury during a fiery match that saw three red cards issued. Valencia, who has kept a close eye on Ecuadorian football since retiring, sent a heartfelt message via social media following the incident.
Chaotic Match Leads to Hospital Rush and Brawl
During a top-flight Ecuadorian league clash between Independiente del Valle and Mushuc Runa on Saturday, Vernaza was involved in a horrific tackle by opposition defender Brian Negro. The challenge left Vernaza with a clear ankle injury, his foot facing the wrong way, as he screamed in pain on the pitch. Negro was shown a red card for the tackle, but protests erupted, sparking a mass brawl between the two teams that left some players in tears.
Vernaza received extensive medical treatment on the field before being rushed to hospital in an ambulance. Valencia, who experienced a similar injury during his time at Old Trafford, took to Twitter to offer his well-wishes, writing: “Stay strong in these tough times, you have to come back even stronger. There is no other option, friend.”
Club and Player Responses Highlight Football Community Solidarity
Independiente del Valle released an official statement expressing deep appreciation for the overwhelming support from fans, clubs, and the wider football community. The club emphasized that this solidarity serves as a fundamental driving force for Vernaza to recover and return to the pitch stronger than ever. Meanwhile, Brian Negro issued a public apology, stating to Diario Ecuador: “I apologize. Being faster, I caught his ankle. As a person and a footballer, I feel terrible. I've called to go to the hospital when things calm down, because it's still hot. I hadn't realized (what happened). Wishing him a successful operation and a speedy recovery.”
Match Outcome and Further Disciplinary Action
Despite the chaotic scenes, Independiente del Valle secured a 3-1 victory in the match. Elvis Velasco initially gave Mushuc Runa the lead, with Emerson Pata equalizing before half-time. Following Negro's red card in the 63rd minute, two more players, Cristopher Angulo and Jordy Alcivar, were sent off after the brawl. Independiente sealed the win with two late goals from Matias Mijail Perello.
This incident underscores the intense emotions and physical risks in professional football, with the global community rallying behind injured players. Valencia's message highlights the enduring bonds within the sport, as former stars continue to support the next generation through challenging times.
