Usain Bolt Warns Teen Sprinter Gout Gout to Stay Focused

Usain Bolt has issued a clear warning to teenage sprint sensation Gout Gout, urging the 18-year-old to remain focused on his ambition of becoming a world-class athlete. The Australian prodigy recently shattered the U20 world record in the 200m at the Australian Athletics Junior Championships, clocking an astonishing 19.67 seconds.

Record-Breaking Performance

Gout's remarkable time not only secured him the national title but also surpassed Bolt's own fastest performance as a teenager. Additionally, he claimed victory in the 100m event in Sydney, further cementing his status as one of the most promising young talents in athletics.

Upcoming Challenges

The young sprinter is set to make his senior Diamond League debut in Oslo this June, where he will face off against Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo. Later that month, he will compete against Noah Lyles at the Ostrava Golden Spike meet. These high-profile races represent a significant step up in competition for Gout.

Bolt, now 39, has cautioned the teenager about the potential pitfalls of early success. Speaking to CNN, the eight-time Olympic gold medallist said: "I think it's so big a transition [moving from juniors] and to have the right people to help to watch you because when you, at that young age - because I was there - you start getting pulled left and right and then you forget track and field."

He added: "So, hopefully, he has the right set of people who actually help to guide him and to keep him focused on track and field because the rest of the stuff will always be there. But if you mess up at track and field, then it all goes away."

Advice for the Future

Bolt expressed hope that Gout would not be discouraged by any initial setbacks in senior competition. "I know it's going to be an eye-opener," he explained. "And I hope it doesn't get him down, but motivate him to work even harder."

Gout made his World Championships debut in September 2025, reaching the semi-finals. While the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow are scheduled for this summer, he appears likely to compete at the World U20 Championships in Oregon instead.

Comparisons to Bolt

Throughout his burgeoning career, Gout has drawn constant comparisons to Bolt. Rather than being unnerved, the teenager embraces the attention. In an interview with the Daily Mail in December, he said: "It's definitely inspiring, because to know that the rest of the world thinks and believes I'm looking like him and could potentially be him is something that can only fill me with confidence."

He continued: "And to be compared to the greatest athlete I've ever seen technically is amazing. Hopefully, I can be up to their level and up to the point where we're being compared because of titles, records, gold medals and stuff like that. My ultimate dream is Olympic gold, hopefully in the 200m in Los Angeles in 2028 and then on to Brisbane in 2032. So it's pretty cool, for sure."
