Portugal took an early lead in the fifth minute when Geoff Cameron's scuffed clearance fell to Nani, who slotted home from five yards. The USA responded well, with Clint Dempsey and Michael Bradley going close, but Portugal held their advantage until half-time.
The USA equalised in the 64th minute through Jermaine Jones, whose curling strike from the edge of the area left goalkeeper Beto with no chance. Nine minutes later, Clint Dempsey put the Americans ahead, sparking celebrations among the players and fans.
However, in the fifth minute of stoppage time, Ronaldo, playing through a knee injury, delivered a pinpoint cross from the left wing. Substitute Silvestre Varela rose above the defence to head the ball past Tim Howard, snatching a point for Portugal.
USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann said: 'That was an amazing game and an amazing performance. All we have to do now is get a result against Germany. We had enough chances to score three or four goals, and we'll go into that game full of confidence.'
The draw means the USA need at least a point against Germany to guarantee progression, while Portugal must beat Ghana by a significant margin and hope for a German victory.
