Sunderland’s 2-1 derby victory over Newcastle at St James’ Park was marred by allegations of racist abuse directed at defender Lutsharel Geertruida. The Premier League has confirmed it will investigate the incident, which occurred early in the second half and led to a temporary stoppage in play.
Referee Anthony Taylor paused the match after being informed by Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka that Geertruida had been subjected to racist comments from the crowd. The official, following the league’s anti-discrimination protocol, consulted both managers and players before resuming the game. Sunderland boss Régis Le Bris said he spoke with Geertruida, who “looks OK”, while Newcastle manager Eddie Howe condemned the abuse but declined to comment further.
The Premier League Match Centre stated: “The incident at St James’ Park will now be fully investigated… Racism has no place in our game.” Newcastle United released a statement saying they are aware of the report and will work with authorities to identify and hold accountable any individuals involved. Sunderland also voiced full support for Geertruida, calling the abuse “abhorrent”.
On the pitch, promoted Sunderland secured a dramatic 2-1 win, completing a league double over their rivals thanks to Brian Brobbey’s 90th-minute strike. The result compounded a difficult week for Howe’s side, who lost 7-2 to Barcelona in the Champions League. Howe described the defeat as “very, very painful” but reaffirmed his commitment to the job.
Northumbria Police made one arrest during pre-match skirmishes between rival fans. The investigation into the alleged racist abuse is ongoing.
