Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson are available for England's World Cup match against Panama on Saturday, providing a significant boost to the squad after injury concerns.
Injury Update on Rice and Anderson
Rice, a key midfielder for England, had been a doubt after picking up a knock during the Ghana game on Tuesday. He was seen leaving Boston Stadium with strapping on his left calf and walking with a slight limp, and did not train fully on Thursday. However, both Rice and Anderson participated in training at England's Kansas City base camp on Friday before the squad traveled to New York.
Anderson had been dealing with muscle tightness, but Tuchel provided a positive update on Friday evening while previewing the Panama match. "Anderson and Rice were training today," Tuchel said. "They had minor issues after the match but they had enough time to recover. So everyone except for Reece James is available, and we will take the decision [on who starts the game] tomorrow."
Tuchel further clarified in response to a later question: "Elliot and Declan are both available."
Reece James Ruled Out
The availability of Rice and Anderson is a welcome relief for England, who have been dealt a blow with Reece James's fitness. The Chelsea captain is the only natural right-back in the squad after Tino Livramento withdrew on the eve of the tournament with a calf injury. James, who has a history of injuries, is now ruled out of the Panama match with a hamstring issue and is also a doubt for England's round of 32 fixture.
