Harry Maguire's England Return and World Cup Hopes
Harry Maguire has made a stunning return to the England national team, earning a call-up for the friendlies against Uruguay and Japan after a near two-year absence. The 33-year-old Manchester United defender, revitalised under manager Michael Carrick, is part of a 35-man squad announced by England boss Thomas Tuchel for the matches at Wembley on March 27 and 31.
Tuchel's Reasoning Behind Maguire's Selection
Tuchel highlighted Maguire's aerial ability as a super-strength that could prove crucial in the upcoming World Cup, played in expected blistering heat where set-pieces may dominate. He emphasised Maguire's solid performances at United and his potential to adapt to England's defensive style. Harry's just played super-solid football, in a bit of a slightly different approach than we play, Tuchel said, noting the need to assess his integration into the squad.
The England manager added that this selection allows him to evaluate Maguire's fit within the group dynamics ahead of the final World Cup squad decision in May. I just want to get to know him, use the momentum, see how he can adapt to our style of defending, Tuchel explained, stressing the importance of team chemistry for the tournament.
Squad Dynamics and Player Management
Tuchel's 35-man squad includes players like Harry Kane and Declan Rice, who will have the first week off due to high club minutes, while others report later. This approach aims to manage fatigue, with 11 players having logged over 3,500 minutes this season. Tuchel defended the large squad, citing the inability of clubs to rest players and the opportunity friendlies provide for physical and mental recovery.
He clarified that the squad is not divided into tiers but acknowledged some players have more credit currently. I would never call it A and B, Tuchel stated, ensuring all call-ups receive focused support during the camp.
Other Notable Inclusions and Context
Kobbie Mainoo, another Manchester United player, also returns after a period out of the England setup, with Tuchel praising his role in United's recent turnaround. The squad features eye-catching picks like Dom Solanke and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, plus James Garner for his versatility in midfield and right-back.
Tuchel noted that at least nine players will be cut after the camp, but he remains open to changes based on performances. The friendlies serve as a critical evaluation phase ahead of the World Cup, blending experienced veterans with emerging talents to build a cohesive unit.
