President Donald Trump's security measures were visibly increased during his appearance at New York's Yankee Stadium on Thursday, following the murder of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. Bulletproof glass panels were installed around the upper-level box suite where Trump watched the Yankees' victory over the Detroit Tigers, marking the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
Police snipers were positioned on the stadium roof, while metal detectors, Secret Service agents, and sniffer dogs monitored entrances to the 47,000-capacity venue. Police helicopters patrolled the skies above the Bronx, and the Secret Service advised fans to allow extra time for entry and to leave bags at home.
Trump faced a mixed reception from the crowd, with boos, cheers, and chants of 'USA' audible when he appeared on the stadium monitor. This echoed scenes at the US Open final earlier this month, where his attendance caused delays and empty seats, though no security glass was used then.
The enhanced security follows two assassination attempts on Trump last year and the fatal shooting of Kirk during a rally in Utah on Wednesday. Witnesses described minimal security at that event, with no bag checks or ticket verification, despite prior death threats against Kirk. Trump announced he would posthumously award Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom during a Pentagon ceremony, which was also moved to a more secure location 'out of an abundance of caution'.
Additional incidents have raised concerns about Trump's safety. On Wednesday in Washington DC, pro-Palestine protesters from Code Pink approached him within a few feet at a restaurant, though the Secret Service stated all guests were screened. On 31 August, agents failed to detect a loaded handgun in a guest's bag at a Virginia golf club while Trump was present. Security is expected to be high for Trump's upcoming state visit to the UK, with thousands of police, Secret Service agents, and drones monitoring around Windsor Castle.
