Transfer Deal Sheet: How Late Deals Are Done on Deadline Day

Transfer deadline day is finally upon us, with Premier League clubs scrambling to finalise last-minute business. After a summer of record spending exceeding £2 billion, the clock is ticking until the 11pm deadline. But for deals that go right down to the wire, clubs rely on a crucial document: the transfer deal sheet.

Introduced by the Premier League in 2008, a transfer deal sheet is a document that allows teams to officially confirm that an agreement has been reached before the deadline passes. It provides a speedy way to signal a deal, granting clubs an additional two hours to complete the necessary paperwork. However, the sheet cannot be used until 9pm on deadline day and must be submitted prior to the 11pm cutoff.

The deal sheet must be accepted by the league before the extra 120 minutes begin. It includes essential details such as the player involved, the clubs, the transfer or loan fee, and any potential add-ons. If the clubs fail to finalise the paperwork within the two-hour extension, the deal becomes invalid.

This system was introduced to prevent late deal collapses due to paperwork complications, a common issue in earlier years. As the clock ticks down, expect a flurry of deal sheets being filed as clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Newcastle, and Liverpool race to secure their targets.
