Tour de France 2026: Stage Seven from Hagetmau to Bordeaux

Stage seven of the 2026 Tour de France delivered a thrilling sprint finale in Bordeaux, as Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) claimed his second victory of this year's race. The Belgian outpowered Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) and Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan) in a bunch sprint that saw speeds exceed 70 km/h in the final kilometre.

Race Dynamics and Breakaway

The 169.9 km stage from Hagetmau to Bordeaux was largely controlled by the peloton, with a three-man breakaway featuring Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies), Pierre Rolland (B&B Hotels), and Alexis Gougeard (AG2R Citroën) gaining a maximum lead of 4 minutes 30 seconds. The escapees were reeled in with 15 km remaining, setting up the expected mass sprint.

According to race director Christian Prudhomme, "The stage was designed to favour the sprinters, and the riders did not disappoint. The finale in Bordeaux is always spectacular."

Sprint Finish and Key Moments

In the final dash, Philipsen launched his sprint with 200 metres to go, holding off a late charge from Van Aert. Cavendish, seeking his 35th career Tour stage win, finished third. The average speed for the stage was 44.2 km/h, the fastest of the race so far.

Philipsen said after the stage, "I felt incredible today. The team did a perfect lead-out, and I had the legs to finish it off. Winning in Bordeaux is special."

General Classification Implications

Despite the flat terrain, there were no changes at the top of the general classification. Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) retained the yellow jersey, with a 28-second lead over Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma). The only notable incident was a crash 30 km from the finish involving several riders, but all were able to continue.

Stage eight is expected to be another day for the sprinters, with a 202 km route from Libourne to Limoges.
