Jamie Carragher has delivered a damning verdict on Tottenham’s survival chances, insisting the “awful” north London side will be relegated after a 1-0 defeat to Sunderland in Roberto De Zerbi’s first match in charge.
Spurs languish in the relegation zone, two points from safety with just six games remaining. West Ham and Nottingham Forest both picked up points at the weekend, leaving De Zerbi’s team in grave danger.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher said: “I can’t believe it. Tottenham look like they’re going to go down…One point in 24…Do you think Tottenham will go to Wolves, bottom of the league, and win? No chance.”
De Zerbi, appointed on a five-year deal, remained optimistic despite the result. “I think we played a good game, not enough to win but we didn’t deserve to lose,” he said. “We have enough quality to come out from this difficult moment.”
Tottenham face a daunting run-in including home games against Brighton, Leeds and Everton, and trips to Wolves, Aston Villa and Chelsea. A first relegation since 1977 looms unless results improve quickly.
