De Zerbi takes Tottenham to Spain to boost morale after poor start
Tottenham head to Spain camp to lift morale after winless start

Tottenham will travel to Spain for a training camp following their Premier League clash with Manchester United. Spurs have nine days between tonight’s visit to Old Trafford and hosting newly promoted Coventry at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday October 19, so Roberto De Zerbi has decided to use the time to take his squad to Marbella for a few days of warm weather training.

Chance for new squad to bond

The camp is also expected to be a chance for Spurs’ new look squad - they added 10 new players over the summer - to bond after a difficult start to the season. Spurs find themselves rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table and have yet to win any of their opening five league games.

They will hope to change that against United, but De Zerbi has already taken steps to try to change the momentum around the club after an extended international break. The timing of the training camp, so early into the season and so soon after a three week international break, is surprising but perhaps reflective of the club’s dire situation.

Change of environment to build morale

While this training camp is not billed as a team bonding exercise, De Zerbi has been keen to use a change in environment to build squad morale since taking the reins in north London. Spurs went to Mayfair restaurant Bacchanalia towards the end of last season for a team bonding dinner to ease the pressure as the club battled with relegation.

Spurs narrowly survived relegation on the final day of last season, but things have not got any better despite more than £300million worth of investment over the summer, and De Zerbi sought to repeat the trick by taking his squad back to Bacchanalia ahead of their Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool last month.
