Dubai Tennis Chief Demands Ranking Point Cuts for Sabalenka and Swiatek

Dubai Tennis Championships tournament director Salah Tahlak has expressed fury over the withdrawals of top players Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek, calling for them to face ranking point deductions rather than mere fines. The pair pulled out of the WTA 1000 tournament on Friday, an event where participation is mandatory under tour regulations, sparking controversy over the adequacy of current penalties.

Stricter Penalties Urged for Player Withdrawals

Tahlak was taken aback by the withdrawals and believes the reasons given were questionable. Swiatek cited a change of schedule, using one of her three allowed exemptions to avoid financial penalties, while Sabalenka officially withdrew due to a right hip injury, confirmed by a tournament doctor. However, Tahlak questioned the severity of Sabalenka's injury, noting the doctor described it as minor and not tournament-forcing.

He stated, It was an unfortunate surprise to get news of the withdrawal of Aryna and Iga. And the reasons for withdrawal were a bit strange. Iga said she wasn't mentally ready to compete, whilst Sabalenka said she has some minor injuries. Tahlak emphasised that fines are insufficient, pointing to past cases like Serena Williams, who faced a $100,000 fine but could easily recoup losses elsewhere.

Apologies Issued Amid Growing Backlash

Both players issued apologies upon confirming their withdrawals. Sabalenka expressed regret, saying, I'm really sorry I have to withdraw from Dubai. I have such a special connection with the tournament, the fans, and the city. Unfortunately, I am not feeling 100%. But I hope to be back next year and wish the tournament a great event. Similarly, Swiatek's statement read, I am sorry to announce that I will not be playing Dubai this year due to a change of schedule. I hope I will come back next year to experience the great tournament. See you guys in Indian Wells.

Call for WTA Rule Changes

Tahlak is pushing for harsher sanctions, arguing that ranking point deductions would serve as a stronger deterrent. He added, I think there should be a harsher punishment on the players, not just fines, they should be docked ranking points. A monetary fine won't help. He plans to raise the issue at an upcoming meeting in Rome, where tournament representatives will discuss with the WTA to address what he sees as a disservice to event organisers investing heavily in facilities.

This incident highlights ongoing tensions in professional tennis over player commitments and the enforcement of tour rules, with Tahlak's demands signalling a potential shift towards stricter accountability in the sport.
