Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel has died at the age of 30 after suffering a cardiac arrest during a Spanish second-division match against FC Andorra. The club confirmed his death on Tuesday morning at 8am local time, prompting tributes from across the football world.
De Miguel was injured in a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during Monday night's 2-2 draw at the Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez Stadium. The incident occurred in stoppage time when Owono raced out of his penalty area to deal with a long ball, with his knee striking De Miguel near the halfway line.
Serious Injuries and Emergency Treatment
The Tenerife forward was left motionless on the pitch, and players from both sides immediately called for medical assistance. Owono was shown a straight red card by the referee. Medical staff spent more than five minutes treating De Miguel on the field before he was taken to hospital by ambulance.
Reports said he suffered a cardiac arrest during the emergency transfer, with medics managing to restore his pulse. He was admitted to intensive care at the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz, where he initially remained in a serious but stable condition. However, Tenerife subsequently revealed that his neurological condition had deteriorated.
Police Investigation and Tributes
Police in Spain have opened a possible involuntary manslaughter investigation. Owono was in tears after the match and is said to be struggling to come to terms with events.
In a statement, Tenerife said: "Heartbroken, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true, we at CD Tenerife announce the tragic passing, on Tuesday 3 November 2026 at 8am, of Jesus de Miguel Alameda. There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this overwhelming sense of sadness."
UEFA has confirmed that a minute's silence will take place at all its European fixtures this week, including the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League. Manchester United and Roma will wear black armbands when they meet at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, with a minute's silence held before the match.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said: "We are heartbroken by the death of Jesus de Miguel Alameda. We have searched for words and found only silence. In that silence, our hearts and thoughts are with his family, his teammates, everyone at CD Tenerife, and all those who mourn this tragic loss."
