Former Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister has called on the club to offer Dominik Szoboszlai a new contract. The Hungary international is now more than halfway through the five-year deal he signed when joining from RB Leipzig for £60 million in the summer of 2023.
Szoboszlai has expressed his desire to extend his stay at Anfield. McAllister, who won the treble with Liverpool in 2001, warned that entering the final two years of a contract should trigger 'alarm bells'. He said: 'I'm sure that as we speak, that will be something Liverpool are looking at. When you get into that realm of under two years, alarm bells should start going off a wee bit.'
McAllister praised Szoboszlai's impact, describing him as a 'game-changer' and a 'fantastic athlete'. He highlighted the midfielder's work rate, set-piece ability, and versatility. Szoboszlai is the frontrunner for Liverpool's player-of-the-year award, having scored 12 goals and provided eight assists this season while playing in various positions.
McAllister also suggested Szoboszlai could one day succeed Virgil van Dijk as Liverpool captain. 'Captains come in all different styles. The style of Szoboszlai makes him someone who could be a captain. He already captains his country,' McAllister said. Van Dijk himself has acknowledged Szoboszlai's potential as a future leader, stating: 'He has been very good. Also a player who I think can still make the next step in terms of being a leader for this team.'
