Dominik Szoboszlai Reveals Liverpool Contract Negotiations Have Stalled

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has publicly acknowledged that talks over a new contract with the club have stalled, despite his expressed desire to remain at Anfield for the long term. The Hungary captain, whose current deal runs until 2028, admitted there has been no real progression in negotiations in recent months.

Contract Situation Remains Unresolved

Speaking after Liverpool's dramatic 2-1 victory over Everton in the Merseyside derby, Szoboszlai provided a candid update on his future. "As I said a few weeks ago, there has been no real progression," the 25-year-old revealed. "So I cannot say anything new about my contract situation. We have a lot of games to go and I am focusing on that."

The midfielder, represented by EM Sports, has been in discussions with Liverpool's hierarchy for several months. The club is reportedly eager to secure Szoboszlai on extended terms following his impressive development since joining from RB Leipzig in 2023. However, the player admitted a new agreement remains a considerable distance away.

Szoboszlai's Commitment to Liverpool

Despite the stalled negotiations, Szoboszlai emphasized his affection for the club and its supporters. "I love being here, as I've said many times. I love the fans and I really like to be here. My family is happy," he stated. "Of course I see myself here in the long term, but as I say, it is not really in my hands any more."

The Hungarian international appears relaxed about the situation, focusing instead on Liverpool's remaining fixtures this season. "I'm completely relaxed. We have five games to go. Then I am going to rest - a big one, after my international break. Then we will see," he added.

Derby Delight and Champions League Push

Szoboszlai played a crucial role in Liverpool's dramatic derby victory at Everton's new Hill Dickinson Stadium, providing the assist for Virgil van Dijk's 100th-minute winning header. The triumph marked Liverpool's first double over Everton since 2022 and kept them firmly in contention for Champions League qualification.

"It felt amazing. We had quite a few corners and chances, like they did. But to win a derby like this in the last second, we couldn't ask for more," Szoboszlai reflected. "I'd rather win it like this than 3-0 or something, you know! This is more enjoyable to watch I think for the fans for both sides, actually."

Focus on Remaining Fixtures

With Liverpool currently fifth in the Premier League and seven points ahead of Chelsea in the race for the final Champions League spot, Szoboszlai emphasized the importance of maintaining focus. "A win always changes the mood but we have to stay on the floor and keep working hard every day," he said.

The midfielder highlighted the challenging fixtures ahead, including crucial matches against Chelsea, Manchester United, Aston Villa, and Crystal Palace. "We have to keep fighting for the Champions League spots and it is going to be hard games ahead of us," he noted.

Optimism About Liverpool's Future

Szoboszlai expressed optimism about Liverpool's prospects under manager Arne Slot, particularly praising the club's recent recruitment of young talent. "I think what Arne Slot said about Liverpool having a bright future is right. We brought in new players - young, talented players," he commented.

"We know what they can do and that they can help the team - that is why they are here. I'm really looking forward to playing with them for the next five games, for sure, and hopefully in the future as well," Szoboszlai concluded, hinting at his continued commitment to the club despite the current contract impasse.
