Sydney Swans defender Riak Andrew is facing a lengthy suspension after using a homophobic slur during the club's VFL match against North Melbourne on Saturday. The 20-year-old first-year player, who is yet to make his AFL debut, was cited for the remark while representing the reserves team.
In a statement, the Swans said Andrew is remorseful and understands the language he used is unacceptable, taking full responsibility for his actions. Chief executive Tom Harley expressed the club’s disappointment, stating the behaviour does not reflect the values of the club.
Harley noted that while the incident is disappointing, the club will use it as an opportunity to provide support and education to ensure Andrew understands the impact of his words. The Swans are preparing to host their annual Pride Game against Essendon on 2 August, a match Harley described as incredibly important to the club.
Andrew was drafted with pick No. 55 in last year’s national draft. The incident follows several similar suspensions: West Coast's Jack Graham was banned for four matches earlier this month, and three other AFL players were suspended last season for homophobic slurs.
