Gordon Strachan Urges Scott McTominay to Reject Manchester United Return
Scott McTominay has been advised to turn down a potential shock return to Manchester United this summer, with club legend Gordon Strachan pointing to Bruno Fernandes' position as a major stumbling block. The Scotland international, who has impressed at Napoli since his 2024 departure, is reportedly in demand as United seek midfield reinforcements.
Questionable Sale Decision Haunts United
Erik ten Hag's approval of McTominay's sale two years ago has become increasingly questionable over time. Manchester United have frequently lacked the energy and determination that the Scottish midfielder would have provided in the centre of the park. This position has now emerged as a key area of focus ahead of the summer transfer window, regardless of who becomes the next permanent manager at Old Trafford.
Michael Carrick has strengthened his credentials as a managerial contender through an impressive stint as interim boss. This development hasn't escaped McTominay's attention, with the player expressing tremendous respect for Carrick and delight at witnessing United's recent resurgence. The two share history as former teammates, while Carrick has also previously coached McTominay during their time together at the club.
System Compatibility Concerns Raised
Despite these connections, Strachan has cautioned his compatriot against returning to his boyhood club, even if Carrick assumes permanent control. The former Celtic manager believes the existing system, with Fernandes operating as a number 10, wouldn't suit McTominay's strengths.
"I don't think Scott McTominay should retrace his steps," Strachan told BetVictor Casino. "I think he has to go into a system that allows him to be the midfield player who gets into the box without too many touches. That's what he fell upon at Napoli - a system that suits him to be free to just get in the box."
Strachan questioned whether Manchester United would employ such an approach, noting: "Would Manchester United play like that? Because you've got Bruno Fernandes playing as a number 10 now. They've got to have the other players who are more set to a certain extent."
Playing Style Analysis
The football pundit elaborated on the tactical dilemma, asking: "Does he like going back there, McTominay, taking the ball from the back four and playing from there? Or does he prefer being 30 yards further up the pitch, waiting for crosses, doing edge-of-the-box stuff? It's got to be a system that suits him."
Strachan provided a frank assessment of McTominay's abilities, stating: "There was a glimpse of McTominay at Man United in certain games. He's not the trickiest player on the ball, he hasn't got the greatest vision in the world, but for somebody attacking the box and getting goals and strength in the middle of the park, then he's your man."
Alternative Options Abound
Should McTominay share these concerns about system compatibility, Strachan emphasized that the midfielder will have no shortage of alternative options. The 27-year-old has become immensely popular at Napoli following his impressive performances in Serie A.
"The good thing about it is that his performances allow him to have these choices," Strachan added. "But I think it has to be the right system that suits him."
Fernandes Factor Could Prove Decisive
These concerns could potentially be eased if Bruno Fernandes decides to depart Manchester United this summer. Rumours suggest the Portuguese playmaker has grown weary of the constant turmoil at Old Trafford and may be prepared for a new challenge. Significant interest from the Saudi Pro League emerged last summer before Fernandes chose to remain for another season following talks with former manager Ruben Amorim.
Meanwhile, Manchester United have been linked with numerous other midfield targets including Sandro Tonali, Adam Wharton, and Elliott Anderson as they seek to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2026-27 campaign. The club's midfield composition remains a subject of intense speculation as the summer transfer window approaches.
