Stevenage Create EFL History With Record-Breaking Start

Stevenage are top of League One under manager Alex Revell, boasting the best points-per-game record in England's top four divisions. Their start is unrivalled in the EFL, achieved despite a bottom-half budget.

A crowd of 7,228 packed into their modest ground for the latest league victory over Luton, the highest attendance since a 1998 FA Cup tie against Newcastle. Revell, a sports science graduate, says the team have something 'everyone else is searching for' and must protect it.

Summer recruitment, overseen by sporting director Leon Hunter, was pivotal. Jordan Houghton joined from Plymouth, while Filip Marschall and Chem Campbell signed permanently from Aston Villa and Wolves respectively. Top scorer Jamie Reid is a Northern Ireland international.

Revell returned to Stevenage in January 2022 as an academy coach before joining Steve Evans' staff. He helped secure promotion to League One and a memorable Cup win at Villa Park. With only seven first-team staff, he says the group is 'tight-knit' and pushing for success.

Revell completed his Uefa pro licence alongside Wayne Rooney and Ashley Cole, studying pressure from emergency services and the Red Arrows. He values momentum and gut instinct, recalling a 5-0 defeat at Newport in 2021 that prompted him to advise the chairman on needed changes.
