Steven Gerrard is under strong consideration for a return to Rangers after the Scottish club confirmed the sacking of Russell Martin on Sunday evening. Martin’s tenure ended following a 1-1 draw with Falkirk, leaving Rangers 11 points adrift of the Scottish Premiership summit after just seven games.
Martin, who was hired in June, won only five of 17 competitive matches. A club statement said results had not met expectations, and assistant head coach Matt Gill and first-team coach Mike Williamson will also depart. Rangers fans had protested vociferously, surrounding the team bus in Falkirk after the match.
Gerrard, who last managed Al Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, won the Scottish title with Rangers in 2020-21, the club’s only championship since 2011. Despite struggles at Aston Villa, he remains highly regarded by the Rangers support, and his reappointment would be popular. The Liverpool icon is aware of limited options to manage in significant leagues.
Other candidates include Danny Röhl, formerly of Sheffield Wednesday, and Sean Dyche, most recently at Everton. The sacking intensifies scrutiny on sporting director Kevin Thelwell, who backed Martin with a £20m net spend in the summer.
