Steve Nicol's FA Cup Medal May Sell for £20,000 at Auction

A prized FA Cup winners' medal belonging to former Liverpool FC defender Steve Nicol is expected to command up to £20,000 when it goes under the hammer at a major memorabilia auction this month. The medal, awarded after Liverpool's dramatic 3-1 victory over Everton in the 1986 FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium, represents the first of Nicol's three FA Cup triumphs and is the highlight of a collection showcasing his illustrious football career.

Valuable Collection from a Storied Career

The auction, hosted by Propstore in London from April 21 to May 14, features over 50 lots from Nicol's personal archive, offering fans and collectors a rare opportunity to own pieces of football history. Alongside the FA Cup medal, which carries a pre-sale estimate of £10,000 to £20,000, several other significant items are set to attract competitive bidding.

European Glory and Personal Accolades

Among the standout lots is Nicol's European Cup winners' medal from Liverpool's tense 1984 victory against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, estimated to sell for £8,000 to £16,000. Additionally, the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year award, which Nicol received in 1989 for his exceptional performances at Liverpool, is expected to fetch between £2,000 and £4,000.

Match-worn shirts also feature prominently in the sale. The jersey Nicol wore during the Scotland versus England Rous Cup clash in 1988 is hoped to bring in £1,000 to £2,000, while the shirt from Liverpool's 1989 FA Cup final against Everton carries an estimate of £3,000 to £6,000.

A Career Spanning Decades and Continents

Steve Nicol, now 64 years old, is best remembered for his 13-year tenure at Liverpool FC, where he scored 46 goals and secured multiple trophies, including three FA Cups. After leaving Liverpool, he played for clubs such as Notts County FC, Sheffield Wednesday, and Doncaster Rovers before emigrating to the United States in 1999 to pursue a career in Major League Soccer.

Reflecting on the auction, Nicol expressed his sentiments about parting with these personal items. "I've been fortunate to be part of some incredible teams throughout my career, from representing Scotland to my years with Liverpool," he said. "These items hold many personal memories, but I'm pleased to be offering them through Propstore, where they'll go to fans and collectors who share that passion for the game. It means a great deal to know they'll continue to be appreciated for years to come."

Global Interest Expected

Propstore specialist Alastair McCrea highlighted the significance of the collection, noting its broad appeal. "This is a fantastic collection that really captures the breadth of Steve Nicol's career, from domestic and European success with Liverpool to his time on the international stage," McCrea stated. "It's not often that material of this quality and provenance becomes available, and Propstore expects strong interest from collectors and football fans around the world."

The auction will also include other notable items, such as an MLS All-Star game shirt signed by football icons Sir David Beckham and Landon Donovan, with a pre-sale estimate of £400 to £800. This diverse offering ensures that the event caters to a wide range of memorabilia enthusiasts, celebrating Nicol's contributions to football on both sides of the Atlantic.
