Steve Davis was visibly moved to tears as the BBC delivered an emotional tribute to the late snooker legend John Virgo at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. The poignant moment unfolded ahead of the World Championship, with other greats like Stephen Hendry, Dennis Taylor, and Ken Doherty also cutting emotional figures as they gathered to pay their respects.
An Emotional Prelude to the Tournament
Before the first match of the championship commenced, Hazel Irvine led the tribute, addressing the audience and viewers. "Before we get our championship underway, we would first like to pay tribute to our dear friend and colleague John Virgo, who passed away in February," Irvine said. "It was a tremendous shock to all of us. John was universally loved by everyone in this sport and well beyond it, too. John really was the voice of snooker."
A Round of Applause for a Beloved Figure
A small video package was played, highlighting Virgo's contributions to snooker, followed by a minute's applause that resonated throughout the building. The six-time world champion, Steve Davis, cut an emotional figure as the applause rang out, marking the passing of Virgo, who died aged 79 at his home in Mijas Costa, Spain, in February.
Irvine continued, "And so while we are all desperately sad here, we're determined to celebrate this great man's life and work in this sport. So in the Crucible and beyond, we would invite those of you who can to please stand for John and offer a minute's applause." The tribute underscored the deep impact Virgo had on the snooker community, with his legacy as the 'Voice of Snooker' being fondly remembered by fans and players alike.
